An Update from Adria
2013
I finished my second year at UBC at the end of April and it seems crazy to think I'm halfway done my degree now. I was able to take a lot of interesting courses this year, ranging from Polish Literature in Translation to History of the American Revolution. My focus has been in history and political science and sometime between now and the end of June I'll get to officially declare a double major in the two. Next year will be more serious as I'll be taking mainly classes for my major program but I'm excited to see what that will end up being like.

Outside of class I've been involved with the UBC Debate Society. I joined last year in October and it's been an exciting experience. I competed at two tournaments this year, UBC IV which is a tournament UBC hosts every year and the McGoun Cup which is the Western Canadian Championship and was held in Saskatoon this year. I also was able to judge at several other tournaments including Canadian Parliamentary Nationals which UBC hosted this year. It was definitely a highlight of my year getting to see some of the best debaters in Canada compete.

For the summer I'm staying in Vancouver and taking a few different summer classes to lighten my workload for next year, an Introduction to Biology course as well as a third year political science class on Democratic Theory. I'm hoping to get a spot in another political science or history course for the second half of the summer term so we'll have to see how that goes.

Adria MacPherson: 2011 Recipient
Adria MacPherson was announced as the 2011 recipient  of the $40,000 scholarship from the Pacific Rim Foundation.

It's a pretty amazing opportunity,” said the grade 12 student of Ucluelet Secondary School.

“It’s kind of life changing.”

MacPherson will go on to study at the University of British Columbia this fall in the Faculty of

Arts with a major in history.  She plans on graduate school, and perhaps pursuing a career in law.

MacPherson was presented with the award June 14.

“Once again, the Pacific Rim Foundation Board would like to acknowledge and congratulate all the Ucluelet Secondary School scholarship candidates for their earnest applications” said Gary Marks, president of the foundation.

“Each one was a picture of lives that are being lived with purpose and integrity. You have all contributed many volunteer hours to your communities and special events. You are truly inspiring in your plans and goals for what lay ahead and give us confidence in our future. We wish all of you the best in your studies and pursuits.”

Every year since 2009 the foundation awards $40,000 to a graduating student through its West Coast Scholarship Fund.

The 2010 recipient of the scholarship was Brittany Mogan of Ucluelet. The inaugural award went to Emily Tranfleld of Tofino.

The board wishes to recognize the teachers parents and families who have influenced their children and encouraged them with enthusiasm, said Marks.

“Thank you for recognizing their individuality and cultivating their confidence in their own ability to learn.”
