August 2023
Over the course of the past year, my life has been a tapestry woven with achievements, learning moments, and the evolution of my personal character. One of the most significant chapters in this narrative involves my transition to independent living, a juncture that presented
me with a myriad of challenges to surmount. From mastering the art of cooking to navigating the intricacies of grocery shopping and time management, this phase introduced me to a whole new realm of responsibilities. Adapting to university life was the major plot point in this journey. Initially, I became so absorbed in my studies that I often overlooked my own well-being. Instances of missing meals due to sheer academic immersion provided a wake-up call about the importance of striking a balance between intellectual pursuits and self-care. However, this phase of reflection led to the realization that exercise, particularly at the gym, not only bolstered my physical health but also invigorated my mental acuity.
The integration of my academic pursuits with social circles wasn't always seamless. Finding an equilibrium between rigorous study commitments and social expectations required effective communication and resilience. A significant milestone in this realm was my acceptance
into the esteemed SCI team at UBC, following a demanding selection process. Being a part of UBC's SCI team is a two-year commitment which enriches my leadership skills by guiding other science students with my team members. This not only fostered academic enrichment but also laid the groundwork for camaraderie and collaborative study efforts. Friendship in university is a tapestry of shared moments and growth. It's a network of support amid academic challenges, a source of laughter during late-night study sessions, and a bond that transcends diverse backgrounds. As I got more into university life, I learned how friendship can not only affect your mental health but also your academic life. I learned that study groups are the best way to review and learn while also enjoying the process. I believe study
groups at university hold immense significance. They foster collaborative learning and allowed me to exchange ideas, clarify concepts, and tackle complex subjects with people who I enjoyed spending time with. There were diverse viewpoints which enhance our understanding since we
would solve the same problem very differently, and it was really enjoyable to see how some people look at things very logically while others do not. Explaining topics to peers reinforces my personal comprehension, improves my time management, encourages accountability, and
alleviates academic stress. I believe social interaction boosts motivation and reduces isolation. The best session for me were those before the exams where we would go with our questions, and there was always someone who knew how to do your question, and you knew how to do
theirs. It felt great to exchange knowledge! My interaction with professors during their office hours was a game-changer for my
educational journey, providing personalized guidance that significantly enhanced my academic progression. Office hours were a way for me to get just a bit closer to professors between 300-500 other students in the lecture halls. They offer dedicated one-on-one time with
professors that allowed me to seek clarification on confusing topics, ask questions, and deepen my understanding of course material.
Beyond academia, my yearning to make a positive contribution to society led me to volunteer at a local hospital. Providing translation assistance to Persian-speaking patients and operating in the emergency department to get to learn more about how the health care system
works. Volunteering at a hospital is a rewarding and impactful experience. It offers me a unique opportunity to contribute positively to the well-being of patients, their families, and the healthcare staff. Through tasks such as assisting with administrative duties, providing
companionship, or helping patients navigate the facility, volunteering has helped me to try to create a welcoming and comforting environment.
Moreover, the interplay between professional exploration and academic pursuits added another layer to my journey. My roles at Canada Post, a mobile store, and a Persian restaurant served as distinct learning experiences. My stint at Canada Post exposed me to the dynamics of
customer interactions and policy comprehension. My time at Canada Post taught me essential skills like customer service excellence, time management, and problem-solving. I developed strong teamwork, adaptability, and communication abilities. The physical demands improved my endurance, and contributing to the community's mail distribution enhanced my sense of civic engagement. In the mobile store, I gained insights into sales strategies and customer service dynamics. However, it was my role as a server at a Persian restaurant that resonated deeply
with me. Beyond connecting me with my cultural heritage, it enabled me to forge meaningful connections with customers and coworkers. Being a server has taught me essential skills like multitasking, clear communication, and remaining composed under pressure. I've learned to
adapt to diverse customer needs, enhance my problem-solving abilities, and work seamlessly within a team to provide exceptional service. Working at a Persian restaurant made me find some Persian friends after a long time and get to know Persians better. Additionally, I proudly hold a first aid and CPR certification acquired over the summer, further bolstering my skills and ability to contribute positively to any situation that may arise. First aid training is vital for immediate response during emergencies, aligning with my aspiration to enter the medical field. These skills exemplify my commitment to patient care, while life-saving techniques like CPR reinforce my dedication to learning and readiness.
I am excited to wrap up my summer with a trip to Toronto. This getaway will help me find balance and recharge before diving back into my studies in September. Exploring the city's vibrant culture and taking a break from routine is the perfect way to rejuvenate for the
challenges ahead. As I approach the precipice of a new chapter, assuming the role of an orientation leader at UBC and embarking on my sophomore year majoring in biology, I am imbued with a sense of growth and determination. Reflecting on the challenges and accomplishments of the past year, I am reminded that the collective experiences have sculpted me into an individual armed with
resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to personal and academic advancement.
